An Introduction to Art Therapy
Sometimes words are hard to find. In these situations Art Therapy can help to make sense of the world and give expression to experiences through different creative processes. These processes include drawing, painting, clay work, sand play, collage, dance & movement or voice work and are guided by the Art Therapist.
Its focus is not diagnosis. It allows issues to emerge through creativity, in a safe, non-threatening and supported way. It can be one to one with the Therapist or in groups or families.
It builds self-awareness and can help in the development of coping strategies for the stresses and anxieties in life which may be preventing us from living well.
It can be used to explore our emotions and help us understand the impact they have on how we live and the choices we make.
We are finding that many of the children who are utilising this style of therapy are displaying some wonderful results in managing their anxiety, stabilising their emotional regulation, giving voice to their otherwise indescribable thoughts, and generally learning to troubleshoot life’s challenges.
